Project Description
Large PtX facilities that can generate hydrogen from electricity and water are in development in Esbjerg, Denmark. To support those developments, Din Forsyning – the local water and heating utility, initiated a project to provide Pure Water to the PtX process and manage the reject water.
The preparations started in 2021 in close collaboration between the city, the utility and two of the larger PtX developers. In 2023 a development agreement for finalizing the projects were agreed between the parties with an expected investment decision in 2025 and the first phase planned to be operational in 2027.
The project is based on filtering and cleaning treated wastewater into a high-quality technical water to be used in the electrolyser process. This includes large investments in water treatment technologies such as Ultrafiltration and Reverse-Osmosis, as well as pipe networks to supply the facilities.
The project is scheduled in two phases, phase 1 consisting of 235 m3/hr of pure water capacity installations, with the plan to add another 235 m3/hr of treatment and supply capacity in phase 2.
Comprehensive Leadership in Commercial and Organizational Strategy
Devcco has been deeply involved in the commercial and organisational development of the project from day 1. We developed the initial business model and commercial roadmap for the project and have been responsible for the commercial and organisational development throughout. We also brokered the development agreements between the parties which laid the foundation for the successful project development.
From Concept to Investment-Ready: Harnessing Devcco’s Project Process Model
The project has successfully matured from idea to an investment-ready project utilizing Devcco’s Project Process Model. Following the construction of the project, Esbjerg and Varde municipalities will enjoy improvements in the water quality of the local Vattensee due to reduced quantities of organic material in the outlet. Furthermore, the project, the experiences, and the organisation built will enable Din Forsyning to develop new excess heat and cooling projects and services to further support a sustainable regional development.
