Netherlands’ First District Cooling System
General Information
- The Zuidas 60 MW project was initiated 2003 was taken into commercial operation in 2006
- A second 60MW system followed in Amsterdam Zuidoost-lob with start of operation 2008
- Both District Cooling systems are today owned and operated by Vattenfall
- Customers like financial corporations, international hotels, hospitals and IT companies are provided with District Cooling from natural cooling sources such as Lake Nieuwe Meer and Lake The Ouderkerkerplas.

- By introducing district cooling Nuon was able to offer a high efficient, full service district energy solution
- Reduces 70% of the CO2 emissions that would come from conventional chillers.
- Meets with margin the 50% CO2 target for the area that the municipality of Amsterdam has set up as a local environmental directive for new developments.

Zuidoostlob district cooling network – in the business section of Amsterdam. Cold water in Ouderkerkerplas Lake provides the cooling capacity.
